About The Unit

The Unit is a small converted shipping container on the farm, offered as part of our work-trade program and best suited for someone comfortable with simple, rustic living.

If you have been looking at rural land in Northern California, imagining a move away from city life, or wondering what it would actually take to live more simply and self-sufficiently, a work-trade stay offers a chance to experience some of that life firsthand before making the leap.

Residents contribute 15 hours of work each week and learn by participating in the everyday life of the farm. Depending on the season, that may include permaculture gardening, harvesting, food preservation, animal care, and general property maintenance. It is practical, hands-on experience with the rhythms, work, and problem-solving that come with rural off-grid living.

Work trade may include

  • Permaculture gardening and maintenance
  • Weeding, pruning, and harvesting
  • Food preservation, canning, and drying
  • Mowing and general farm maintenance
  • Animal care
  • Occasional cow milking if interested
